Bill would mandate life rings along Indiana's shoreline

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Legislation mandating life rings along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Indiana has advanced in that state’s Senate.

Sen. Rodney Pol Jr., D-Chesterton, said the bill would save lives. It advanced out of committee on a unanimous vote, but never got a hearing last year.

At least six people are known to have drowned along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Indiana last year.

Some life rings have already been installed along the shore.

The proposed measure would require them along piers and beaches, many of which are not staffed by lifeguards.

Illinois lawmakers mandated life rings along the Chicago lakefront, following years of resistance from the Park District, which cited potential liability.
