WINNETKA (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The owner of lakefront property in Winnetka has dropped a plan to create a barrier that some complained would block views, but a land-swap deal with him and the village still appears to be in a state of limbo.

Many village residents objected to the plan, Justin Ishbia, a private-equity billionaire, had to erect what has been variously described as a wall, guardrails or louvers on breakwalls separating his property from a re-developed public beach. He owns property between two public beaches.

The village would get that in a land-swap deal that would allow the parks and beaches to be combined. Ishbia told Crains “we’ve heard the community.”

While he’s dropped that part of the plan, he still wants a barrier between the public beach and the land he plans to build on to the south, signaling the end of the public beach.

The land swap deal, he said, amounts to a $ 3 million donation to the village. And, nothing can be achieved until all of the necessary approvals come from the government agencies that are involved.
