(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police are investigating a fatal accident that resulted from a bar fight in Beach Park early Monday.

It started as a verbal altercation between a 32-year-old Chicago man and another patron at a bar on North Sheridan Road around 2 a.m., authorities say.

Lake County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said the 32-year-old man was removed from the bar, became upset and punched his arm through a window.

"This caused a very large, serious laceration to one of his arms, which caused significant bleeding,” Covelli tells WBBM Newsradio.

A friend began driving the man to the hospital. The injured passenger drifted in and out of consciousness and at one point grabbed the wheel, causing an accident, Covelli said.

"Sheriff's deputies arrived along with Waukegan police. The man was transported to an area hospital. However, due to the injury he sustained and likely loss of blood, he was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital,” he said.

Covelli says police are still investigating. An autopsy was planned.
