HAWTHORN WOODS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Residents of northwest suburban Hawthorn Woods should expect to keep boiling their water through the weekend, as problems persist with the village’s water supply.
Mayor Dominick DiMaggio is sympathetic to residents’ frustration that has been growing since the water stopped Sunday morning.
“[I] hope this gets down quickly, and we get our residents back to clean drinking water,” said DiMaggio.
He said Aqua Illinois has gotten better about providing updates as to why the water hasn’t been fully restored.
“The explanation we received is that, when the system had to get shut down, apparently the tank was filled by Aqua too quickly…they called it ‘water hammers,’ causing other leaks and possible weak points,” DiMaggio said.
The company said air pockets are common and it’s working to slowly rebuild pressure in the system while testing a suspected break on Quentin Road and will make repairs.
“There are air pockets in there and, when you depressurize the system and you pressurize it back up, the odds are you’re going to have some other leaks that are created because of that,” Aqua’s Director of Corporate Development Jim Bilotta said.
The mayor said the necessary shutoff should only affect people in the Hawthorn Trail subdivision. The rest of the village, as well as part of Kildeer, should have running water now but it’s not fully pressurized, which means the boil order continues.
The mayor said that means the distribution of bottled water will go on as well, at the village’s still-closed Aquatic Center.
