HAWTHORN WOODS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - After three hot days without running water, it’s coming back online in Hawthorn Woods, but a boil order remains.
Jim Bilotta with Aqua Illinois said they still aren’t certain why a water main broke, cutting off water to some 1,200 homes in Hawthorn Woods, part of Kildeer and unincorporated Lake County.
Barry Alpert said he’s had to leave his Kildeer home to shower and manually add water to flush his toilets since Sunday morning.
He said neighbors told him yellowish water started running again this morning at around 11, while it returned for some Hawthorn Woods residents Tuesday night.
“We were getting all these excuses about what the problem was, excuse after excuse, 14 different reasons, and so that’s the part that was really infuriating,” Alpert said.
The company was repressurizing the system and handing out bottled water at the Hawthorn Woods Aquatic Center on Wednesday.
Bilotta said they’ll be back out today for sure and maybe Friday if the pressure takes time to build.
Hawthorn Woods Mayor Dominick DiMaggio is frustrated because he said residents were told conflicting stories from the utility, and the outage forced the village to close the Aquatic Center Monday and Tuesday.
He said the 4th of July holiday is usually the busiest weekend for the center.
“We’re losing a lot of revenue for our residents and our residents who count on this to bring their kids, bring their families” DiMaggio said.
The center won’t reopen until the EPA signs off, and the water is safe to drink again without boiling it.
