Reckless crash in far northern suburbs leaves 5-year-old boy dead, toddler critically injured: Sheriff

BEACH PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident that occurred Tuesday evening in Beach Park, during which a man was allegedly driving recklessly and caused a crash that killed one child and seriously injured another.

It happened at about 5 p.m. on Green Bay Road, just north of Hart Street.

According to the sheriff’s office, a 24-year-old Waukegan man was driving a Chevy Malibu, illegally passing cars with a toddler in his lap.

His car slammed head-on into a GMC Sierra, seriously injuring the driver, a 57-year-old man from Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.

The child in the Waukegan man’s lap, a 2-year-old boy, was critically injured and was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago.

The Sheriff’s Office said the man was seriously injured,as well. He had to be extricated from the Malibu.

Before he was taken to a hospital, he told deputies there was nobody else in the car.

They then found a critically injured 5-year-old boy under debris behind the driver’s seat.

The child was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
