(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — It was a busy weekend for firefighters in Braidwood, Ill., who were tasked with saving a dog from a storm drain.

Crews at the Braidwood Fire Protection District responded at about 2 p.m. to a public service request to rescue a dog from an abandoned storm drain in the middle of a field on Friday.

“The dog fell through the overgrown grass that was in the ground and fell approximately 10 – 15 feet into this abandoned storm drain,” said Braidwood Fire Chief Christopher Jude.

About five minutes later, Jude said a crew of six people arrived on the scene.

“We set up all our rigging and were able to send one rescuer down in the hole to retrieve the dog,” Jude said. “We reunited the dog with its owner with no injuries.”

Jude said it's not often that they get these kinds of calls, so he was proud of the way crews responded.

“Being there, witnessing it and being part of the event, I have nothing but high regards to my guys,” he said. “They did a stellar job.”

He said the district contacted public works, which covered and secured the storm drain to ensure no more pups will get stuck.
