CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It's been rumored for weeks, but now some aldermen are saying Mayor Brandon Johnson will call for a property tax hike when he unveils his budget tomorrow.
He campaigned against raising property taxes, but, back in March, voters rejected Johnson’s Bring Chicago Home plan to increase the real estate transfer tax.
Now, the Chicago Tribune reported three aldermen informed of the mayor’s budget plans say he will turn to raising property taxes to dig out of a nearly $1 billion budget hole.
The Tribune said the mayor also wants to sweep money from TIFs instead of layoffs or other staffing cuts that are unpopular with unions.
A spokeswoman for the mayor declined to comment on the potential tax hike.
