CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Campaign season is starting this week for candidates interested in running for the Chicago School Board.

Campaigning begins for Chicago's first-ever elected school board this week, with candidates circulating nominating petitions for voters to sign in their districts.

The hybrid-school board model gives voters the power to choose 10 of the 21 members to server on the board. After the November 5 elections, the mayor will appoint 11 members.

The board members, both the elected and the appointed members and the appointed board president will all serve for two-year terms which begins January 15, 2025.

In order to get on the ballot, candidates must collect at least 1,000 signatures by June 24, according to the Chicago Board of Elections.

Six candidates have filed campaign finance paperwork with the Illinois State Board of Elections so far.
