CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The suspect in the shooting death of Chicago police Officer Andres Vasquez-Lasso is to appear in a bond hearing today, just hours after a vigil was held to remember the officer.
The 32-year-old police officer was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute in the Gage Park neighborhood this past Wednesday.
Prayers filled the air at a park on the Southwest side Thursday night, the community and family attended. The officer’s widow held a candle while friends gave her support.
“It’s very difficult, but, for our officers, we have to be there, and they’re the ones (with) boots on the ground. That helps me put my uniform on is to be there and help them,” Police Commander Bryan Sprevne told CBS-2.
Close to 100 people came to Hale Park near 62nd Street and Merrima, including many police officers, and neighbors.
Officer Vasquez-Lasso was a five-year veteran of the department.
The suspect, 18-year old Steven Montano has been charged with several crimes, including first-degree murder.
