(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A 58-year-old Stickney Township woman allegedly tried to suffocate a 6-year-old boy last month because he was crying, the Cook County Sheriff’s Department said.
Sheriff’s police detectives on Feb. 27 responded to an elementary school in Burbank when school officials reported a possible incident of child abuse.
Detectives determined Julie Espinosa, a caregiver for the alleged victim, had placed a pillow over the boy’s face because he was crying, the sheriff’s department said. The child vomited after the pillow was removed, officials said.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services placed the victim and his minor siblings in the care of a relative, the sheriff’s department said.
Espinosa was arrested this week and charged with one count of felony aggravated battery of a child. Additional information was not immediately available.
