CARY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Residents of a townhouse complex in Cary were evacuated Monday after a car took out a gas meter.

It was about 5 p.m. when a car on the 1200 block of West Lake Drive left the road and sideswiped the townhouse building. It sheared off the gas meter and hit a tree.

The driver was initially reported to have been trapped in the car. The fire department said it came to rest on top of the meter.

The driver was removed and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Residents were evacuated as a precaution. It took about three hours to shut off the gas.

A crew had to dig down in the frozen ground to get to the line.
