MAPLE PARK (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The operators of a horse sanctuary in Kane County that's on the verge of losing its home are making an urgent appeal for donations.

Casey's Safe Haven in Maple Park provides boarding and care to horses that were abused or neglected. About a dozen of those horses need special and often expensive care.

The sanctuary's board learned last month that the owner of the farm Casey's has been renting plans to sell it.

Mitch Bornstein is Casey's horse trainer and barn manager. If Casey's has to close, Bornstein worries several of the horses would have to be euthanized.

“Given the animals that inhabit our facility and given the fact that we have taken in animals with such serious conditions, if we cannot purchase our property, we are looking at a situation where we are unable to move our horses and unable to rehome them,. “We are looking at having to take lives because we’ve run out of options,” says Bornstein.

A GoFundMe campaign seeks to raise $750,000 dollars to help Casey's either buy the property or find another location.
