(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — With the holidays come the questions of who to tip and how much.
Nancy O’Brien, the founder and CEO of The Magnetic Truth, said the first thing you need to do is ask yourself which service-providers make a difference in your life. It could be a dog-walker, your barber, a caregiver or a housekeeper.
“Those are the people that you think of that, if they were out of your life, your life might not be quite as manageable,” said O’Brien, a personal performance consultant.
If you know the person really well, O’Brien said, you might give a nice personal gift. For instance, if you know your barber likes a particular brand of cigars, you might want to buy a box of cigars for that person.
Otherwise, O’Brien suggests giving the amount in cash as a tip that you’d usually pay for their service.
If giving cash isn’t feasible for you, O’Brien said you still can let the person know how much you value what they do:
“Write a hand-written note or pull that person aside and just tell them how much they mean to you throughout the year, how their belonging in your life really makes a difference to you. Those types of sentiments will truly go a long way.”
Or, she says, you can bake some cookies or make a gift for them.
