CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Investigators are trying to figure out what caused an explosion that badly damaged a West Side apartment building Tuesday morning and caused multiple injuries.

Peoples Gas said it was not a natural gas explosion at a four-story building at West End and Central. At least eight people were injured after the explosion and part of the building collapsed.

Cleanup will continue today. Displaced residents were taken in by a nearby church, which served as a Red Cross shelter.

The city said that, while the building has had code violations in the past, there were no current violations against the building.

The owner of the building said he’s heartbroken by what happened and is ready to do what he can to support residents.
