CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Peoples Gas and the Chicago Fire Department have a few pointers to keep people safe as the temperatures drop into the sub-basement.
First Deputy Fire Commissioner Mary Sheridan says don’t use stovetops or ovens for heat. If you’re using space heaters, keep them away from curtains, furniture and bedding. If you’re using extension cords, be sure they’re UL (Underwriters Laboratories) rated.
Also, don’t try to thaw frozen pipes with an open flame.
“Clear your sidewalk, assist your neighbors and senior citizens in clearing their stairs and sidewalks. Please assist us in keeping our fire hydrants clear,” says Sheridan.
Charlie Graham with Peoples Gas also has suggestions.
“Remove overhead icicles to prevent dripping water from freezing on your natural gas meters and your pipes,” Graham says.
Also, the city of Chicago reminds us, homeowners and business owners are responsible for clearing sidewalks.
