(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Old military favorites and new combat planes will be among the highlights of next month's Chicago Air and Water Show along the lakefront.
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are among the headliners for the show, scheduled for Aug. 20th and 21st from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The show can be viewed along the lakefront from Fullerton to Oak Street, with North Avenue Beach as the focal point of the show.
Lieutenant Katlin Forster, the Blue Angels’ events coordinator, said the massive C-130J Super Hercules planes will start off each show.
“Our C-130J Super Hercules, affectionately known as ‘Fat Albert,’ will open the show with about an eight-minute performance,” Forster said, “And then the F-18 Super Hornets will take off and fly overhead for about 40 minutes.”
This will be the first full-scale Air and Water Show since the pandemic. The show was canceled in 2020 and scaled down in 2021.
The F-18 Super Hornets are combat jets known, in part, for their high-speed precision maneuvers.
“We’ll see the precision formation flying that the blue angels are known for, and really showcasing the Super Hornet’s flight capabilities,” Forster said. “That’s really an honor for us, since most of our team flew the Super Hornet while in the fleet, so getting to show the plane that a lot of the Navy is flying is really awesome for us.”
The U-S Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, along with current and vintage military aircraft, are also scheduled to appear at the Air and Water Show, which takes place on August 20th and 21st
For the first time, the U.S. Air Force Heritage Flight and U.S. Navy Legacy Flights will be in this year's Air and Water Show. The U.S. Navy has provided an additional F-35C Legacy II to its Legacy Flight to incorporate a dedication to the late Rudy Malnati Jr.
