CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An ordinance to lower the City’s speed limit from 30 to 25 mph was withdrawn, while officials consider how to put it into effect equitably.

Alderman Daniel La Spata had been pushing for a vote to lower Chicago’s main speed limit to 25 mph. But, at Wednesday’s council meeting, he pulled the measure back, instead calling for a study group to look into possible enforcement.  He acknowledges there are many people who are concerned that minority communities might be unfairly targeted.

“They deserve to see us restoring trust that this is about equity and behavior change and not about picking people’s pockets, so I do feel good that we moved the Working Group Resolution,” La Spata said.

Later, Mayor Johnson praised La Spata for considering issues of equity and offering to work things out with those concerned.

La Spata said that he wants to see the speed limit ordinance brought back for a vote as soon as possible.

“I’m going to do the work so that we’re back here in a month, if at all possible,” said La Spata. “We don’t have time to wait…133 people died last year, 39 of those in the last two months of the year. We can’t wait.”
