(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Animal Care and Control is near capacity and it’s encouraging people to think local when it comes to adopting an animal.

The spokesperson for Chicago Animal Care and Control, Jenny Schlueter, said the shelter currently has 248 dogs, which is making things pretty crowded.

One that’s up for adoption is Marty, apparently named after actor Marty Feldman.

“A Good Samaritan found him and brought him in, and his eye was bulging out,” she explained.

The shelter removed Marty’s right eye. He’s fine now, full of energy and more than ready for adoption, she said.

Another dog that needs a home is Maji. She was brought in April 29 and obviously had puppies and was full of milk. But there were no puppies with her.

“She was pacing. She was searching for them. It was really heartbreaking to see, but we were never able to figure out what happened,” Schlueter said.

Maji loves people and would love a home where she’s the only dog, she said.

Schlueter on Monday encouraged people to adopt Chicago animals, even though a lot of local shelters are getting dogs from states that have overflowing shelters.

“Texas is having a hard time and a lot of groups are importing dogs from Texas,” she said.

That’s great, Schlueter said, but there are lots of local dogs that need adopting.
