(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A local animal shelter wants to make sure that dozens of dogs and cats have a home for the holidays.
The "Adopt-a-thon" at PAWS Chicago is underway through Dec. 18.
The PAWS shelter in Lincoln Park will have additional hours so that people can have more time to meet with adoption counselors.
"Our adoption counselors here are very highly trained,” PAWS Chicago CEO Susanna Homan said Friday.
“What we do is we ask people questions about their intentions, their needs, what kind of home they live in, how many children they have because certain pets do better in certain environments.”
PAWS hopes to connect up to 120 dogs and cats with new families before Christmas.
Homan said people always inquire about adopting cats and dogs. But she added that some breeds of dog are tougher to adopt than others.
"A lot of that has to do with the fact that we are a city where there are a lot of apartments and condos that have breed restrictions and weight restrictions. So the pool of adopters for those 40 pound plus dogs is a lot smaller," Homan said.
Adoption consultations are by appointment only. Those interested can stop by the PAWS Chicago shelter on Clybourn Avenue in Lincoln Park or visit pawschicago.com.
