CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Without a word of debate, the full Chicago City Council approved the measure raising the minimum wages of contract airport workers to $17 an hour.
That’s $2 more than the citywide minimum wage for all other workers and the airline industry raised objections to that in committee.
The airport worker pay could jump to $18 an hour in July of 2023, and after that, there would be annual hikes keeping pace with inflation, similar to the citywide minimum wage.
The measure goes into effect this July and will affect about 6,500 workers that include baggage handlers, wheelchair attendant, caterers and those who de-ice the planes.
