CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The St. Charles Public Library reopened for in-person visits on Monday, but some patrons were surprised to be greeted by a security guard.
“It was quite a shock to realize the influence that some individuals have on the public library that I love,” said Chase Szorc, who walked into the library Wednesday afternoon. “All the people that work there are always very nice to me, so I don't know why anyone would want to threaten a little old lady from doing her job.”
The west suburban library had closed to in-person visits for more than two weeks after receiving threats over its mask policy.
Susan Wukitsch has volunteered at the library for about 10 years.
She said it was upsetting to have to leave while the facility solely offered a drive-up window and virtual services.
“I was very angry because I don't consider [threats] to be part of an educated, well-brought-up person,” Wukitsch said. “I mean, you have your own opinions, but you don't threaten people.”
Wukitsch said she’s happy to be back again and appreciates the added security measures.
Staff at the St. Charles library told WBBM Newsradio there have not been any incidents since reopening to in-person visitors.
