Chicago area snowfall totals amid Winter Storm Warning; Evanston reports 18 inches

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Another major snowstorm dumped more than a foot of snow in some parts of the Chicago area beginning Monday and continuing into Tuesday morning.

A a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Dangerous travel due to snow and low visibility is expected. Blowing snow, especially near the lake, will cause near whiteout conditions at times early Tuesday morning, the NWS said. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches is expected Tuesday. Total snow accumulations will exceed a foot and a half in some locations near the lake.

Lake-effect snow dumped 17.7 inches at Midway Airport as of Tuesday morning, the weather service said. About 7.5 inches were reported at O’Hare Airport.

Forecasters are expecting another half-inch Tuesday.

Monday saw temperatures as high as 12 degrees during the day and as low as 1 degree at night with windchills bottoming out at minus 12 degrees, forecasters said. Tuesday’s high is expected to be 17 degrees.

Wind gusts of 20 mph are predicted Tuesday, with windchills as low as minus 8 degrees, forecasters said.

As of 7 a.m. O’Hare Airport reported 82 flight cancellations while Midway Airport reported 73, the Chicago Department of Aviation said. Both reported delays of less than 15 minutes.
