HINES, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — This Veterans Day, some Chicago-area veterans are asking civilians not to forget those who served — and then struggled.

Chicago native Bryant Anderson served in the US Army in Germany in 1978. He said there are so many veterans who served honorably but now don't even have a home.

“That homeless veteran that's out there on the street, we are trying to come together and bring them back home,” Anderson said.

Another veteran, who served in the Vietnam War who is homeless, asked that people not only remember veterans who are homeless, but those who have taken their own lives.

Both veterans spoke to WBBM Newsradio during an early Veterans Day event at Hines VA Hospital in Chicago’s western suburbs.

Anderson said that while his service has ended, his mission never ends.

“Veterans never get a chance to sleep,” he said. “We are up 24 hours a day trying to protect and serve the country.”

Veteran Lisa Cole, who was in the army from 1989 – 1991, said she doesn’t think enough people recognize the sacrifice made by all veterans.

“I feel like it's a day off for some people,” she said.
