CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot is critical of top Chicago Park District officials for not informing her that the state’s attorney’s office is now investigating allegations of abuse and sexual assault among beach lifeguards.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office is now investigating allegations that lifeguards at Oak Street Beach were abused, in some cases sexually, while on the job.
Foxx reportedly informed Park District Superintendent Mike Kelly and Board President Avis LaVelle a month ago. The mayor didn’t learn until last week, not that she was caught off guard.
Lightfoot said the allegations involve serious crimes. Still, she feels she should have heard it from park district officials directly.
She said all investigations should be completed and the young women who came forward deserve justice.
A district deputy inspector general was fired amid the scandal, and the inspector general herself quit because of ethical issues of her own.
