Caleb Williams, Bears starters won't play in preseason opener Thursday

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) – The Bears will rest their starters in their preseason opener against the Texans on Thursday in the Hall of Fame Game, head coach Matt Eberflus said Tuesday.

With Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams sitting out, backup quarterback Tyson Bagent is set to start. Reserve quarterbacks Brett Rypien and Austin Reed are also expected to play.

Eberflus indicated the Bears are eager to see reserve players fill key roles Thursday. The team has structured its practices in training camp to benefit its starters.

As part of this plan, the Bears will run a split practice Wednesday at Halas Hall.
The players who won't play in the Hall of Fame Game will be on a separate field from the reserve players who will play.

The Bears and Texans will kick off at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
