Taste 222 is one of the 26 Black-owned businesses taking part in the event. Their special CBRW menu commemorates the annual event and has deals on some of their specialties including shrimp & grits and steak frites.

Chicago Black Restaurant Week was founded in September 2015 by Lauran Smith in an effort to celebrate local businesses in the African American community.

In honor of Dr. Carter G Woodson — creator of Negro History Week — CBRW takes place during the second week in February, which was when Negro History Week was created in 1926.

Sweet Vegan Bakes is another business participating in the event. Their plant-based menu varies from vegan fried chicken to cupcakes. They even make every ingredient in-house, since the owner Chef Cheryl Nelson wants to know everything that is included in the food.
