Church blessed with wondrous gift: 'Everywhere I went I could smell bananas'

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Forget Manna from heaven. A South Side church has received bananas from heaven – or, from a generous donor.

The Rev. David Black of First Presbyterian Church said about 300 bananas were mysteriously dropped off Tuesday at the church at 64th and Kimbark.

“Everywhere I went I could smell bananas,” Black says of the discovery. “When I got the lights on, I just saw them everywhere. They were in crates, in the middle of the hallway, under the water fountain, outside a doorway.”

People have come to the church to pick up the bananas. Some have gone to food pantries, individual homes and to shelters that serve new arrivals.

Meantime, Black says the church deduced who dropped off the produce, if not why they did. But it’s ultimately a blessing, he said.

“There are many things we’re trained for in seminaries. This was a class I missed out on, somehow.”
