(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Part of Howard Street -- the dividing line between Chicago and Evanston -- may be getting a makeover.

It was 30 years ago when Howard Street had a 2,000-foot-long guardrail in the middle of Howard, which was a short-lived and mostly unpopular attempt to control traffic.

Now, Chicago and Evanston are working together on a new plan for their border street, an initiative called One Howard Street. It will focus on the area from Sheridan Road to Western Avenue.

"We have some vacant property on Howard Street, and so we need to see what the community would like to see in those,” says Sandi Price, executive director of the Rogers Park Business Alliance.

"We have people that just kind of loiter on the streets, which we didn't have a lot of that, pre-pandemic. There are gun-related incidents on Howard Street."

Price says the first community meeting to talk about the One Howard Street plan is April 22.

Results may be ready by fall, and a funding source has yet to be identified.
