CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some faith leaders have gathered in Federal Plaza Tuesday to add their voices to those urging Congress to pass the voters’ rights legislation now before them.
Rabbi Michael Ben Yosef, head of the Chicago Activist Coalition for Justice, said — in the spirit of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. — people must act in the face of many laws restricting voting rights being passed in states around the country.
Pastor Emma Lozano said they are praying to God for passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the For the People Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.
Joining clergy members in Federal Plaza, Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez said attacks on voting rights underway around the country will not cease without a demand nor without Congress members standing up.
The activists said they feared some rights are being taken away.
Ben Yosef led the call for passage of voting rights legislation as the best way to honor King’s legacy.
