(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For the second day in a row, the Chicago Fire Department has gathered to honor a colleague who died in the line of duty a year ago.

Mayor Brandon Johnson called Lt. Jan Tchoryk dedicated and selfless at a dedication ceremony Friday at the Quinn Fire Academy in the South Loop.

“His love for our city, our neighbors and his family was greater than any hesitation or fear,” Johnson said.

The 55-year-old Tchoryk died of a heart attack while fighting a fire in a Gold Coast high rise one year ago.

Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said the fallen firefighter embodied the essence of bravery and dedication.

Tchoryk’s  widow, mother and children -- including his son Dylan, who is a Chicago police officer -- touched the firefighter’s badge after it was unveiled and became the latest added to the department’s memorial wall.

His badge is displayed next to that of fellow firefighter Jermaine Pelt, who died the day before him. Pelt was honored in a separate ceremony earlier this week.
