CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Argentinian soccer superstar Lionel Messi's decision to play in Major League Soccer has meant ticket prices for the Chicago Fire game against his new club are going through the roof.

The Fire sold 10,000 tickets the same day Messi announced that he’ll be going to Inter Miami.

A spokesman for the team said that's roughly the same amount they sold to the October 4 game in the months leading up to that point.

The game at Soldier Field also saw a major price jump as soccer fans clamored to see the 2022 World Cup MVP.

A check of what's available showed tickets start around $285 a piece. One fan tweeted three hours after the announcement that he bought tickets for 37 dollars each — they were selling for $500 or $1,000.

Fire Spokesman Jhamie Chin said they have not announced plans to open the upper deck at Soldier Field yet and are monitoring demand.
