CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - We’re learning more about the death of one of the two Chicago firefighters who died in the line of duty this week.
Jermaine Pelt, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, died of smoke inhalation. More specifically, the report said, “carbon monoxide toxicity” due to “inhalation of smoke and soot.”
“Firefighter Jermaine Pelt, who are personally knew and worked with, was on the hose line, conditions worsened, and all members were ordered out. It appears that Firefighter Pelt went down as crews were being ordered out of the building. A mayday was called, and he was quickly found near the hose line and brought out for treatment,” Holt said the morning of the fire.
Jermaine Pelt was 49.
The commissioner again found herself talking about another line-of duty death Wednesday.
“This has been a tragic week for us, unprecedented,” said Holt.
Lietunant Jan Tchoryk died after collapsing in the stairwell of a Lake Shore Drive high rise.
The elevators were inoperable because of water damage. He was climbing to the 27th floor where an apartment was burning. He collapsed on the 11th floor and was carried down by his crew. Tchoryk was 55.
