(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago lawyer is going to jail for cheating clients in Northwest Indiana.
Federal prosecutors said 46-year-old Rajesh Kanuru had already entered a guilty plea to wire fraud and embezzlement and has now been handed a 33-month prison sentence, two years of supervised release and must pay about $350,000 in restitution.
From 2012 until 2018, Kanuru devised a scheme to defraud clients who had filed for bankruptcy.
Specifically, Kanuru represented a family from Lake Station, Indiana in a personal injury lawsuit when those clients later filed for bankruptcy. Kanuru was supposed to gather the settlement proceeds to turn over to the bankruptcy estate, but instead, he kept the money for himself.
