CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A crowd gathered outside Andersonville’s LGBTQ+ friendly bar, Nobody’s Darling, to hold a vigil for the victims of a night club shooting in Colorado Springs.
"The reason we're here is to make sure that we know that our family in Colorado Springs knows that we stand with them,” said organizer Dawn Valenti.
The attack at Club Q Saturday night left 5 people dead and dozens more injured.
Police said a 22-year-old was taken into custody after two patrons at the bar subdued him.
14-year-old Noam said the Colorado venue is similar to Nobody’s Darling in that it was supposed to be a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community.
"That's what I fear the most is being who I am to get me killed,” he said. "Because every time I tell someone I'm gay or trans I have to way the risks. Is it safe?"
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot condemned the attack, saying “a gun, coupled with hate, once again has led to horrific outcomes.”
Sunday’s vigil happened to coincide with Transgender Day of Rememberance, a day meant to honor lives lost in anti-transgender violence.
Governor JB Pritzker also shared his condolences on social media, writing, his “heart is with the Colorado Springs community and the loved ones who are grieving because of another senseless tragedy.”
