(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 23-year-old Chicago man acquired more than 20 firearms using fraudulent information, and some of the weapons ended up in the possession of others, including a felon, federal officials said Monday.
Stovall Buchanan in 2019 and 2020 acquired 23 handguns and a rifle from suburban Chicago firearms dealers after certifying he resided a Mason Avenue address and, in some cases, saying he was the actual buyer, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
Buchanan, however, resided at a different address at the time of the transactions, federal prosecutors said. And within months, most of the guns were no longer in his possession, authorities said.
Four of the firearms were later found to be in the possession of other individuals, including one felon who was not allowed to have a gun, prosecutors said.
Buchanan is charged with making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of a firearm, an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
He made an initial court appearance Monday. No further details were available.
