CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Johnson's plan to deal with the issues surrounding mental health care likely spells the end of the line for the city's top health official.
In his inaugural address, Johnson repeated his intention to reopen city-owned and run mental health clinics that were shuttered under Rahm Emmanuel. It’s something that was also promised by Lori Lightfoot. But, she pulled back on that promise after the City served more people under a system that used nonprofit clinics too. Current Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady stands by that system.
Johnson told WBBM last week he still disagrees, but he’s not asking Arwady to leave immediately.
“We did have a brief conversation. We did not go into details about this particular dynamic, in terms of providing mental health services through mental health centers throughout the City of Chicago. But, I have asked her, and she’s willing to stay on for the next three months,” Johnson said.
