(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Young people celebrated being bused in to vote early in the coming general election.

Community activists cheered as a bus load of students from Vaughn Occupational School arrived at the Board of Elections Supersite downtown to vote, many for the first time.

The action of voting itself was special for Coralys Gandia, a senior at Vaughn.

“I’m very excited. I’m a little nervous right now, but it’s OK. I got this. I’m strong,” Gandia said.
She was ready to cast her vote.

The non-profit Mikva Challenge is working with the Chicago Public Schools to help students learn how to be more involved in civics and the electoral process. So, Carla Rubalcava, managing director of programs at Mikva, said they were bringing students down to the Board of Elections Supersite to vote early.

“This is an initiative in partnership with Chicago Public Schools Occupational Center. So a lot of the students here are students with disabilities,” Rubalcava said.

“So we're really excited to give them access to our election and to understanding, you know, their values and their contribution to their community and society.”

Gandia voted after learning and researching along with other students.
