CPS parents participate in drive-by protest in front of City Hall as the district and teachers union battle over COVID-19 safety protocols

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Parents and teachers have been making themselves heard as the standoff between the Chicago Teachers Union and the Chicago Public Schools saw another day without classes.

Police shut down LaSalle Street in front of City Hall as the CTU mounted a horn-blowing, drive-by protest in the Loop. Meanwhile, online, community groups were outlining what they called Trust, Learning and Care (TLC) demands for getting teachers and their children back into the classrooms.

“Before our children return to school, I demand and expect fully-staffed schools, adequate sanitation and safety protocols in place,” said Angela Spencer, who is with the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization.

Wilma Pittman, who is with Northside Action for Justice, agrees with Mayor Lori Lightfoot that remote learning isn’t good for all students. But, she said she thinks “it’s better for parents to sit in the house with their children doing remote learning than to have to sit in the hospital with them.”

The group leaders said the teachers are not wrong and their demands are parallel with the CTU’s.
