CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A month after ex-Chicago Park District CEO Michael Kelly was forced out over handling of sexual harassment allegations among lifeguards, Park District Board President Avis Lavelle has become the latest casualty. She has now resigned.
After a decade on the Park District board, Avis Lavelle said she is stepping down at Park District Board President because the culture of sexual harassment and abuse at district pools and beaches came to light on her watch. But, she said, she followed the district's protocols for handling the investigation, so those protocols should be reexamined.
"I've made the decision to step down. Guided by my values and consistent with my legacy of integrity, this will be my last meeting, my last day as president and as a member of the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners," Lavelle said.
She went on to say she came to this board position "with my integrity and reputation in check. I would do nothing in this role, or in any position, to put that at risk."
And she wanted to make one thing clear as she leaves.
"I am not being forced out. Mayor Lightfoot did not ask me to resign. She has been resolute in her support of me privately and publicly, and for that I am profoundly grateful," Lavelle said.
"I leave you knowing that you are in good hands with a board comprised of committed public servants and the great new leadership team."
Lavelle said she moves from this stage to the next with her head held high.
LaVelle first entered city government as former Mayor Richard M. Daley's first press secretary. She was appointed to the Park District Board a decade ago by former Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
