CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has opened an investigation after Chicago police officers shot and killed a man in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood early Sunday morning.
It happened shortly after 1:15 a.m. on South Blue Island Avenue near West 18th Street, according to a police spokesperson. Officers heard multiple gunshots and responded to the scene, where officials say they found multiple “armed offenders” and began shooting. The police officers struck one of the offenders. He was taken to a local hospital and declared dead.
In response to questions from WBBM Newsradio, Chicago police did not disclose the specific number of offenders. Police did not clarify what may have happened to any other offenders at the scene.
Following the shooting, police officers found a gun in the slide-lock position, which means the gun was out of bullets.
Investigators later determined that the offender, and those with him, were firing at a nearby vehicle. Inside the vehicle, police found two people: a man and a woman. They were both wounded and taken to local hospitals in critical condition. No other details were shared about the victims.
Chicago police said two officers were taken to a local hospital for observation. One officer had minor injuries.
COPA is investigating the actions of the police officers. Officials said the officers will be placed on routine administrative leave for a minimum of 30 days.
