(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new report shows that federal prosecutors in Chicago are less likely to approve gun charges than other cities, despite having some of the highest firearm numbers in the country.
The report from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) represents so-called “crime guns” — guns that have been recovered by law enforcement in connection to a crime — as well as crime gun evidence recovered by law enforcement between 2017 and 2021.
According to the report, Chicago was second only to Houston when it came to the amount of crime gun investigations.
Federal prosecutors in Chicago, though, are less likely to approve gun charges than their counterparts in most other cities, the ATF reported.
In the Northern District of Illinois, which includes Cook County, prosecutors approved only 45% of the gun cases presented to them, compared to a 71% approval rate in San Francisco and a 63% approval rate in the Eastern District of New York .
