(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 17-year-old Chicago Public Schools student was fatally shot Friday afternoon in Hyde Park, authorities said.
The teen was in some kind of “altercation” around noon with the occupants of a vehicle in the 1600 block of East 50th Place, police said. The vehicle chased the teen, and two people exited the automobile and fired several shots, police said.
The teen, struck several times, was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, university police and Chicago fire officials said.
The boy was a CPS student, likely at Kenwood Academy High School, which is near the scene of the shooting, Deputy Police Chief Ron Pontecore said.
Pontecore believes Kenwood had open campus lunch at the time of the shooting.
A gray Dodge Challenger with no license plates was seen fleeing the scene, according to university police.
Other agencies gave the victim's age as 15.
