(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — City officials are giving a group permission to rally and march downtown in August, hours before the Democratic National Convention gets underway.
The LGBTQ+ and abortion rights group Bodies Outside of Unjust Laws, had been seeking a permit to protest during this summer's DNC. They were supported in their fight by the ACLU of Illinois.
Leaders have said they planned a rally near the Chicago River at 5 p.m., with a march to the statue of Union Army General John Logan near 9th Street on the night of August 18. The route will pass by Millenium Park and hotels where DNC delegates are staying.
Chicago officials are allowing that to proceed as part of a new agreement.
“We are pleased that our demands for comprehensive and inclusive healthcare policies that affirm the needs of trans & queer people will be within sight and sound of people on and around Michigan Avenue,” said Kristi Keorkunian, of Bodies Outside of Unjust Laws. “Delegates and others gathering for the DNC need to hear this message – not just around the convention but every day.”
However, group officials say they'll continue to fight over other demands, including so-called security zones near McCormick Place and the United Center during the convention.
