CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Leaders across Chicago are denouncing threats of immigration raids by the new Trump administration as the immigrant community anxiously watches and waits.
Cardinal Blase Cupich calls the reports “profoundly disturbing” and said, while in Mexico City, the Catholic community stands opposed to any plan involving mass deportation of U.S. citizen children of undocumented parents. Cupich said indiscriminate mass deportation would be an affront to the dignity of all people and communities.
Chicago Police put out a statement Monday reminding people the department is barred from participating in civil immigration enforcement under the city’s Welcoming Ordinance.
A CPD statement reminds residents it will enforce the law if a crime happens, regardless of the citizenship status of those involved.
There is no class today in CPS, while CEO Pedro Martinez also pointed to the sanctuary city’s policies that mean the district does not ask students or their families about their immigration status nor allow U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents into schools unless they have a criminal warrant.
