CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After a Chicago team makes it to a championship game, allegations surfaced that one of its coaches was abusive.

The story is not about the Chicago Blackhawks. It’s about the Chicago Red Stars, the women’s soccer team.

The Red Stars lost the National Women’s Soccer League Championship Saturday and by Sunday evening, the team announced the resignation of its 48-year-old coach, Rory Dames.

That announcement came hours before a Washington Post report with several former Red Stars accusing Dames of emotional and verbal abuse.

For instance, he was accused of using players’ personal information as the basis of his attacks, calling a player who hailed from Appalachia trailer trash.

Another time, when one player was not communicating so well, he allegedly screamed, “If you can’t even talk on the field, what kind of mother are you?” He also allegedly joked to an Asian player that she should be playing “smarter” than she was.

Several players took their allegations in 2018 to U.S. Soccer, the sport’s governing body, but the Post said U.S. Soccer took no apparent action.

The Red Stars told the Post there’d be an independent review of player health and safety and the team’s work culture.
