We're getting a new look at what travelers may one day see when they pass through Chicago, through a video city leaders just dropped depicting the next concourse at O'Hare International Airport.
The nearly two-minute clip that Aviation Commissioner Michael McMurray brought with him to his appearance Thursday at the City Club of Chicago this week put in motion some of the renderings we've seen of what will be known as Concourse D in Terminal 1, which is United Airlines' home terminal.
The videos show people walking and sitting under trees and tree-shaped fixtures which are designed to recall the fruit orchards that used to grow on the airport property. Remember, O'Hare used to be called "Orchard Field," which is the origin of the airport's "ORD" code that you see on boarding passes and luggage tags.
The images depict a building with lots of windows, lots of natural light, and a large observation area looking out at the city skyline.
The new concourse and its 19 gates are set to open in 2028.
