CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A free concert from the Chicago Independent Venue League (CIVL) this Thursday at Millennium Park is just a taste of an entire week in Chicago celebrating its local music industry.

Independent Venue Week will run Monday through Sunday with more than 400 small venues participating nationwide. In Chicago, it will feature programs hosted at nearly two dozen local, independently owned and operated venues.

In a press release, CIVL wrote that “Chicago’s reputation as a world-renowned live music hub is largely due to independently owned and operated music venues’ legacies of nurturing homegrown talent.”

In some cases, the local venues have helped lift artists toward the global stage.

“We do really feel [that] it’s important to follow, promote, and lift these artists as we go along,” said Matt Woodburn, co-owner of the Chop Shop in Wicker Park.

Woodburn has helped organize the free Millennium Park concert that he said will put some local artists in thousands of ears.

“Emerging and diverse acts such as Ric Wilson, Mario Abney and his brass band, and Tasha to open us up,” Woodburn said.
