CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Beginning today, two Chicago communities are getting some extra protection from West Nile Virus.

Crews are in both the South Side’s Beverly and Washington Heights neighborhoods, spraying EPA approved insecticides aimed at killing adult mosquitoes.

The Chicago Department of Public Health says the spraying was expected to begin around dusk and extend until early tomorrow morning.

It’s the result of a city-wide mosquito surveillance program, which found the action necessary in the two neighborhoods. It’s the first spraying of its kind in Chicago all season.

Residents are reminded the spray is not harmful to humans or pets.

CDPH staffers will hang signs on residents’ doors, alerting them of the ongoing spraying.
