CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Faculty and staff at Chicago State University are on strike today after ten months of negotiations.

Weekend talks did not produce agreement, so about 160 members of Chicago State’s chapter of the University Professionals of Illinois are hitting the picket line. The union’s president said the administration has pushed them to this point as the lowest-paid among their peers in the state.

CSU officials say data shows the average faculty salary at the university is actually in the middle range among all public universities statewide. They said the union’s financial demands far exceed the school’s economic position but they have reached agreement on workload, office hours and parental leave.

The administration said some classes will be taught by other instructors, while telling students to check their email for updates.

Strikes are looming this week at Governors State and Eastern Illinois universities as well.
